The Telegraph has published an article on the ten easiest languages to learn for English speakers. The article claims that, given the links that English has with other European Germanic languages and the quantity of words it contains from other languages, in particular Latin and French, when it comes to language study, English speakers are not starting from scratch.
Amongst the top ten easiest languages are Spanish, whose pronunciation is fairly easy for native English speakers with only ten vowel and diphthong sounds (English has twenty), and Swedish which shares many cognate words with English and has similarities in syntax. Also appearing in the list is Afrikaans which, like English, is in the West Germanic language family and has a logical, non-inflective structure.
