CALR lecture tomorrow: Learning vocabulary in the L2 classroom: the effects of multimodal input on young learners

The second CALR lecture of the new semester is taking place on Wednesday 13th February 2013 from 5:00-6:30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Avenue Campus, University of Southampton. The seminar is entitled “Learning vocabulary in the L2 classroom: the effects of multimodal input on young learners” and will be presented by Dr Sarah Rule from the University of Southampton.

Italian film showing today: La Vita Facile (2011)

The Easy Life: The second film of the season is a dramatic comedy which is full of unexpected twists and turns. Mario Tirelli, a rich and successful surgeon in Rome, suddenly decides to head to rural Africa to lend a hand to his life-long friend, Luca Manzi, who has been out there for twelve years as a voluntary physician. However, Mario causes nothing but problems when he forces his way into the kingdom that Luca has so carefully built up from nothing. When the two friends finally seem to be back on the same page, the unexpected arrival of Mario’s beautiful wife, Ginevra, changes everything…

The many languages of London

The London Evening Standard has reported on statistics from the 2011 Census showing that 78 per cent of the capital’s residents speak English as their main language, with the remaining 22 per cent, equivalent to just over 1.7 million people, speaking another first language.

Italian film showing today: Il sorpasso (1962)

The Italian film, Il sorpasso (Dino Risi, 1962) will be showing in Lecture Theatre A, Avenue Campus, at 6.30pm on Monday 4th February 2013. A review, introduction and discussion will be led by Alessia Plutino.
