Conference on Open Educational Resources

Staff from the University of Southampton attended a one-day conference on open educational resources in modern foreign languages on Friday 20th September, at the University of Bristol. Kate Borthwick from LLAS gave the opening keynote address about her work at LLAS, exploring various aspects of open educational practice with different groups of language teachers in the UK. Alessia Plutino, Teaching Fellow in Italian, also showcased her online materials for Italian, a selection of which can be found on the LanguageBox.

A diverse range of work was presented during the day, including findings from running small-scale MOOCs (“TinyOOC?”) for the learning of languages; the OU’s wide range of open initiatives in languages; work on new open German grammar materials; a demonstration of the open courseware available through the Cambridge University Language Centre; and news from the University of Reading, of a project which will make generic, skills-focused OERs for the learning of any language available nationally through the Routes into Languages network.
