Vote for this year’s public language champion

The Guardian is asking the public to vote for an individual in the public eye who they think best champions language education for the second year of its Public Language Champion Award. The award, launched in partnership British Academy, aims to recognise a public figure who has demonstrated commitment to and passion for the importance of language in British society.

Free language learning app reaches new levels of success

The Guardian has published an article about the journey and ambitions of Luis von Ahn, creator of the free language learning app, Duolingo. Launched in 2012, the app now has 40 million registered users worldwide and engages its users with its unique design and teaching methods. Von Ahn’s hope is that it will continue to allow anyone who has internet access to learn a language for free.

Spanish may become the ‘dominant’ language in schools

TES Connect has reported on a prediction by Andrew Hall, the chief executive of exam board AQA, that Spanish is soon likely to become ‘the most commonly-taught foreign language in UK schools’. The report follows this year’s GCSE results, which showed an increase of more than 20,000 Spanish GCSE entries since 2012.

Modern Languages represented at 2014 Eurocall conference

Julie Watson and Kate Borthwick are amongst colleagues from Modern Languages attending the 2014 Eurocall conference, taking place from 20-23 August 2014 at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Julie’s presentation entitled ‘Sizing up the online course: adapting learning design to meet growing participant numbers’ will take place on the second day of the conference. Read more…

Professor Mike Kelly answers questions from modern languages students on new website

Professor Mike Kelly from Modern Languages at Southampton was answering questions yesterday from students interested in studying or working abroad as part of the launch of a new website called TYA Answers, created by Lizzie Fane, the founder of thirdyearabroad.com. Funded by HEFCE through the Routes into Languages initiative, TYA Answers is dedicated to supporting students who have questions about studying or working abroad during their degree. Areas for discussion on the website include what it’s like studying languages at university, careers for ‘Global Graduates’, culture shock advice and making the most of your year abroad.

Languages and Entrepreneurship

Are you a student or graduate of modern languages? Are you interested in entrepreneurship? If so, you may be interested in reading a recent Higher Education Academy guide, written by modern languages entrepreneur and founder of Third Year Abroad, Lizzie Fane, and entitled ‘Languages and Entrepreneurship: A Guide for Students’. The report aims to support and inspire students who are thinking of starting a business based on their experiences with language, travel or culture.

Do you know any inspirational language champions?

Nominations are now open for the 2014 Threlford Memorial Cup, an award presented annually by the Chartered Institute of Linguists Educational Trust for a significant contribution to ‘fostering the study of languages’. The Cup can be awarded to a person, organisation or project that deserves to be recognised within the field of language study. The deadline for nominations is Friday 5 September, and the IoLET Awards Evening is to be held at the Barbican, London, on Thursday 6 November 2014.

The role of language and technologies in deaf culture
