University students and staff will be participating in celebrations today organised by the Confucius Institute to mark the Chinese New Year. Two 2-hour Chinese cultural workshops will be taking place in the SUSU concourse from 12:00-14:00, Highfield Campus, enabling participants to try their hand at calligraphy, lantern making, paper cutting and Chinese painting. On Sunday 22nd February, Westquay will also be hosting entertainment from 11:00-13:00, including lion dance, traditional Chinese folk dance, and a Kung Fu display.
The Lunar New Year, starting on 19th February 2015, marks the Year of the Sheep/Goat/Ram. The confusion around which of these animals it should be named after most likely results from different interpretations of the associated Chinese character.
