Modern Languages staff to present at Intercultural Connections Southampton Conference

A number of Modern Languages staff will be presenting at the Intercultural Connections Southampton Conference, taking place on Tuesday 28th April 2015 from 9:00-16:30 in Garden Court, Highfield Campus.

Amongst the sessions, Julie Watson will be presenting on the following theme: “Get Ready for Southampton: a pre-arrival online transition course for all international students coming to the University of Southampton”. Designed and coordinated by the eLanguages team in Modern Languages, the 2015 version of this course is now live, with over 200 students already participating from 52 countries. Last year 2,500 students had participated in the course by the end of the summer. Read more…

University of Southampton Voices to perform ‘Requiem in Blue’ this Saturday

A number of staff from Modern Languages at the University of Southampton will be participating in the University community choir’s performance of ‘Requiem in Blue’, at St Michael’s Church in Bugle Street, Southampton, this Saturday 25 April 2015. The University of Southampton Voices will perform alongside Cantores Michaelis and Romsey Abbey Primary School. The performance starts at 7.30pm. Read more…

The University of Southampton/British Council MOOC ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’ starts today (run through FutureLearn). This is the second run for this successful *FREE* online course, which has already attracted over 58,000 learners.

New report presents language learning issues facing the UK

The Guardian has published an article discussing the ‘seven big language learning issues facing the UK’, highlighted in the recent ‘Living Languages’ report. The report presents some of the key areas of debate that have resulted from the two-year ‘Case for Language Learning’ project, undertaken by the Guardian and the British Academy, which aimed to explore the reasons for the UK’s shortage of foreign language skills.

New Lifelong Learning Modern Languages evening classes to start

'Welcome' in different languagesIf you have recently taken the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Lifelong Learning language evening course, now is the perfect time to expand your skills! University of Southampton Lifelong Learning has launched its programme for the coming semester, to include language stage ‘C’ classes in a range of languages. Please note that these classes are not suitable for beginners – further beginners classes will begin in October 2015.
