Call for papers open for BALEAP 2017 conference

BALEAP

The call for papers for the BALEAP 2017 Conference, taking place at the University of Bristol from 7th-9th April 2017 is open. The conference theme is ‘Addressing the State of the Union: Working Together = Learning Together’ and will look at English for Academic Purposes (EAP) from a variety of different perspectives, with the aim of building bridges between different communities of practice.

Modern Languages to host BALEAP PIM on English Medium Instruction

BALEAP PIM - June 2016

The Department of Modern Languages at the University of Southampton will be hosting this year’s BALEAP Professional Issues Meeting on Saturday 11th June 2016 at Avenue Campus. The event is entitled: EMI in Higher Education: the challenges and the opportunities.

This year’s event promises to be a whirlwind tour of Japan, the Sudan, Hungary, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Dubai, Malaysia, Bulgaria and Turkey, not to mention Ireland and the UK. Discussions will address a broad range of issues around English Medium Instruction and its interface with EAP, including ethics, training, assessment, NES versus NNES teachers, and language versus content.

New PAL (Pay, Access and Learn) portal launched by eLanguages today

eLanguages Pay, Access and LearnThe new PAL (Pay, Access and Learn) portal, which will enable individual learners to choose and then licence sets of interactive online learning resources at low cost for periods of either one or three months, is being launched today by the eLanguages team in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. Designed for learners already studying EAP (English for Academic Purposes) or preparing to apply for university courses in the UK, each set of ten learning resources provides at least six hours of activity-based learning, with sets currently available including basic and more advanced skills in academic writing and vocabulary for study purposes. Online renewal or licence extension is easy and can be done at anytime from anywhere.

English for Academic Purposes language skills support classes for international students starting Monday

A new range of classes for international students currently studying at the University of Southampton will begin in the week commencing Monday 10th February 2014.

Courses are five weeks in length and include: Academic Writing Skills; Writing your Masters Dissertation; Writing your PhD Thesis; Seminar and Presentation Skills; Critical Thinking; and Everyday English.

Students can enrol for the classes on a first come basis from Monday 3rd February via the Modern Languages website. For further general information about classes, please email eapcourses@soton.ac.uk.

New English for Academic Study (EAS) website launched at University of Southampton

Victoria Rowe and colleagues from the English language section in Modern Languages and Professional Services have recently launched a new English for Academic Study (EAS) website. It features our year-long pre-sessional course, which has recently been modified to become a three-part programme.
