University hosts successful China Day as part of Culture Festival week

China Day, hosted jointly by the Faculty of Humanities, the Confucius Institute and the Chinese Students and Scholars Association, with support from SUSU, took place on 27th April 2016 in the SUSU Concourse, and was a great success! Activities included a traditional music performance, paper cutting, calligraphy, Kung-fu and a photo exhibition. Some of the highlights of the event can be seen on this short video.

The day was organised as part of the SUSU Culture Festival from 25th-19th April 2016, a celebration of the different nationalities and cultures we have at the University of Southampton. Brazilian Carnival at the Students’ Union

This Saturday, SLAPS (the Spanish, Latin American and Portuguese Society) and the Brazilian Society are holding a Carnival in Bar 2 of SUSU (Southampton University Students’ Union) this Saturday.

A display about the event can be seen along the north corridor of Avenue Campus, and more information about the event, including where to buy tickets, is available on the Facebook event page.

Future Modern Languages students to attend Routes into Languages Study Day

getreadyforlanguagesApproximately 100 Year 12 students will be visiting the University’s Avenue Campus on Wednesday 17 June to participate in a Routes into Languages Study Day.

Students will participate in sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, and will have the chance to do an ab initio session in Chinese or Portuguese. Participants will also have the chance to ask our Modern Languages students about studying languages at university during a student panel session. Read more…

Modern Languages to host Year 8 Able Linguist Days

welcomeModern Languages will be welcoming over 250 Year 8 students to the Avenue Campus this week for two Able Linguist days, taking place on Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th June 2015.

Students will participate in a mini-project in French, German or Spanish, and will have the opportunity to try a new language such as Portuguese or Chinese, plus hear a talk about languages about how they can be useful in the world of work.

International Staff Café in April

The next International Staff Café, for University staff who would like to meet and network with international colleagues, find out how things work in the UK, and/or discuss pedagogic and practical issues, will be taking place on Thursday 30 April from 4:00-5:30pm in the Nuffield Theatre Kitchen café. During this event, Professor Otto Muskens (Quantum Light and Matter Group, FPSE) will talk about his personal experience with the British Higher Education system and his personal journey from lecturer to Professor.

Language Testing Forum

Today is the last chance to book your place at the Language Testing Forum 2014, to be hosted by Modern Languages at the University of Southampton from 21-23 November. This year’s conference will focus on the theme of ‘Language Testing: Engaging multi-disciplinary perspectives’, and offers the opportunity for language testers and language educators to engage with new developments in the field.

Launch event for the Institute for Language and Culture: 6th November

The Institute for Language and Culture (ILC) launch event, entitled ‘New Directions for Research in Language and Culture’, will be held on Wednesday 6th November 2013 at the University of Southampton’s Avenue Campus. Highlights include:
Inaugural lecture of Professor Marion Demossier
Keynote presentations by external speakers
Panel discussion about the future of language and culture research
Poster session about current research at the ILC, led by postgraduate researchers.
