Get Ready for Southampton 2017 launches!

Get Ready for Southampton

The eLanguages team in Modern Languages have launched the 2017 edition of the free online course Get Ready for Southampton. This course aims to show what life and study is like for international students at the University of Southampton, and provides an opportunity for students to network prior to arrival. This is the seventh summer that this course has been run, and so far it has been used by over 12000 prospective international students, and over 300 students have already signed up to this year’s edition.

The course is free to all international students who are coming to Southampton or just interested in a course of study with us. If you are an international student and would like to take the course, find out more on the Get Ready for Southampton website.

Academic language skills support for University of Southampton international students

The International Centre is offering academic language skills support sessions to University of Southampton international students who want to develop their English language and academic literacy skills during their studies. In Semester 2, sessions are available in grammar, presentation skills, critical thinking, academic writing, everyday English as well as PGT Dissertation and PGR Thesis writing support in two teaching blocks. Block 1 will begin in teaching Week 3 and Block 2 in teaching Week 9.

Students can enrol online in Week 2 on a first come basis via the Online Store website.

Get Ready for Southampton

Now over 1700 students from over 110 countries have used Get Ready for Southampton so far this year. The course is aimed at international students who are considering coming to study a degree at the University of Southampton or who have already applied. The course will be open until early October so there’s still time to join and meet your potential classmates!

Yesterday the eLanguages team in Modern Languages launched the 2015 edition of the free online course Get Ready for Southampton. This course aims to show what life and study is like for international students at the University of Southampton, and provides an opportunity for students to network prior to arrival. There are already over 60 students from 23 different countries participating in the course. This is the fifth time this course has been run, and so far it has been used by over 8800 prospective international students.

The course is free to all international students who are coming to Southampton or just interested in a course of study with us. If you are an international student and would like to take the course, find out more on the Get Ready for Southampton website.

Prepare for Success: free online learning resources for international students

Prepare for Success
International students who are about to begin studying in the UK and their teachers may find the study skills and EAP resources in Prepare for Success really useful. The resources on the Prepare for Success website, which was designed by the eLanguages team in Modern Languages here at Southampton, are free for anyone to use.

They include interactive learning activities about academic life in the UK, a frequently asked questions page, and a blog about study and life for international students in the UK. Prepare for Success is aimed at international students whose first language is not English and is suitable for students with an IELTS level between 5.5 and 7.5.

UKCISA Annual Conference this week!

UKCISAUKCISA (the UK Council for International Student Affairs) will host its annual conference this week from 2nd to 4th July at the University of Liverpool. With a packed schedule of over 50 sessions ranging from immigration topics to international student experience and recruitment, the highlights will include plenary sessions from Jonathan Portes, Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, and Rebecca Hughes, Head of Education at the British Council. Special guest poet will be Roger McGough at the gala dinner on Thursday evening at Aintree racecourse.

Pre-sessional course begins next week

Hundreds of international students will be arriving from all over the world to take part in the summer pre-sessional courses in English for Academic Purposes in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton, beginning on Monday 30th June 2014.
