Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching

Modern Languages at Southampton will be relaunching the University of Southampton MOOC, ‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ on Monday 19 October, for the third running of the course. This four-week course will introduce participants to the field of second language learning, consider language classrooms and the role of teaching in language learning, and explore the uses of technology in teaching. The MOOC will also provide a taster of the Online MA in English Language Teaching, a joint course from the University of Southampton and the British Council.

University of Southampton 11th annual e-learning symposium 2016: Call for contributions

Do you make innovative use of technology in language teaching and learning? Have you been experimenting with MOOCs and wish to share your experiences? Do you use social networking sites, virtual worlds or mobile technology with your language students? Are you engaging students in the creation or use of open educational resources?

The Centre for Languages, Linguistics, and Area Studies (LLAS) welcomes proposals for presentations, workshops and posters at the University of Southampton 11th annual e-learning symposium, taking place on 21-22 January 2016 at the University’s Avenue Campus. The conference theme is: Humans and the machine: best practice in using technology for language teaching. Abstracts for proposed presentations or workshops should be no more than 400 words. Abstracts must be submitted by Monday 12th October 2015 via this i-survey link.

LLAS publishes free, open access ebook to celebrate 10th elearning symposium

e_symposium2015LLAS (Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies) in Modern Languages at Southampton has recently published a free, open access ebook: “10 Years of the LLAS elearning symposium: case studies in good practice”. This edited collection celebrates the 10th anniversary of the elearning symposium and features contributions from practitioners across the UK and the world. The book includes case studies and reflective pieces which showcase good practice in the use of technology for language teaching and learning.

Next iPad Coffee Club

Modern Languages staff and students with an interest in technology enhanced teaching and learning may be interested in joining the next iPad coffee club, taking place at Avenue Campus on Wednesday 10th June at 10am, on the sofas near reception, outside Avenue café.

This is an informal event supported by the Institute for Learning Innovation and Development, providing an informal forum for staff and students to discuss a range of learning and teaching resources available via tablet devices.

MOOC ‘Understanding Language’ hits the 100,000 learner mark

The free online course ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’, coordinated jointly by Modern Languages and the British Council, closed its second, successful run last week. This run of the course recruited 41,271 learners and this takes the total learners over both courses to 100,090. This recent course featured extra live sessions from staff in Modern Languages, and achieved a high level of learner-engagement with course tasks and activities.

New MOOC on ‘Dyslexia and language teaching’ to be launched

Lancaster University is launching a new four-week MOOC on ‘Dyslexia and language teaching’, which will run from 20 April – 17 May 2015. Aimed at English language teachers, teachers of modern languages, teacher trainers, educators and trainee teachers, the course will enable its participants to reflect on how they can cater for the needs of students with dyslexia in the foreign/second language classroom. Participants will also explore a number of techniques, including new computer-assisted tools, which can be used to support students in the classroom.

Report on current climate for language teaching

The BBC has reported on findings from a report by the CfBT Education Trust and the British Council, which highlights the current “difficult climate” in England’s schools for language teaching. In particular, the report notes the low uptake of language GCSEs and A-levels as areas for concern. In terms of more positive developments, the report also found continued growth in language teaching in primary schools, with around half of primary schools now allowing pupils to study languages at Key Stage 1.

This four-week course, which already has 27,000 subscribers, will introduce participants to the field of second language learning, consider language classrooms and the role of teaching in language learning, and explore the uses of technology in teaching. The MOOC will also provide a taster of the online MA in English Language Teaching, a joint course from the University of Southampton and the British Council.

The case for more practical language teaching in schools

According to a recent Guardian article, increasing numbers of school teachers believe that language teaching in schools needs to become more practical if student engagement and motivation with language learning are to be sustained. This is particularly the case currently in primary education where teachers are faced with the challenges of implementing a new curriculum of compulsory language teaching.
