Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching

Modern Languages at Southampton will be relaunching the University of Southampton MOOC, ‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ on Monday 17 October. This four-week course introduces participants to the field of second language learning, considering language classrooms and the role of teaching in language learning, and exploring the uses of technology in teaching. The MOOC will also provide a taster of the Online MA in English Language Teaching, a joint course from the University of Southampton and the British Council.

New MOOC on ‘Dyslexia and Foreign Language Teaching’ starts today

Lancaster University is launching a MOOC on ‘Dyslexia and Foreign Language Teaching’ starting today, Monday 18th April 2016. This free course is designed for current and trainee teachers of additional languages, and offers a combination of practical tools and theoretical insights to support teachers to meet the needs of students with dyslexia.

Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching

A new run of Modern Languages’ MOOC ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’, starts today, Monday 4th April, and will run for four weeks. Over 15,000 people have signed up to take the course already. This will be the fourth run of the MOOC, taking its reach to over 160,000 people.

Third run of Modern Languages’ MOOC ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’ a success

Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching

Modern Languages’ MOOC ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’ has just completed its third run. 44,284 learners participated in the course, bringing the total number of learners who have signed up for the MOOC to 145,041.

This run of the MOOC included a live session led by Professor Jennifer Jenkins, Dr Will Baker and Dr Ying Wang from Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. The session was lively and learners challenged and tested the team’s ideas on ELF and Global Englishes.

New MOOC: How to succeed in the English B1 Level Exam

A new MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on ‘How to succeed in the English B1 Level Exam’ has been launched this week (starting 3rd November). The MOOC is aimed at learners with an intermediate level of English as a Foreign Language who would like to take an official exam. The MOOC has been developed as part of the European Project ECO and offers a wide range of learning strategies and tips, all free of charge.

Cultural Studies and Modern Languages MOOC to be relaunched

The award-winning MOOC ‘Cultural Studies and Modern Languages’ by the University of Bristol goes live for the second time on Monday 12th October 2015. The MOOC, delivered by the Modern Languages department at Bristol, offers a free online introduction to the study of Modern Languages and Cultures, aimed at a sixth-form audience and beyond, and requiring no language other than English to follow it. Students are introduced to a range of foreign cultures via key slogans, texts, monuments, and images over a four week period. The course is ideal for anyone thinking of taking courses in Modern Languages, European / World history or cultural studies at university.

British Council launches MOOC for EFL teachers

On 31st July a new MOOC will be launched by the British Council. This free online course will last for 6 weeks and is aimed at people who are teaching English as a foreign language to help them develop the skills and practices needed for continuing professional development (CPD). MOOC ‘Understanding Language’ hits the 100,000 learner mark

The free online course ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’, coordinated jointly by Modern Languages and the British Council, closed its second, successful run last week. This run of the course recruited 41,271 learners and this takes the total learners over both courses to 100,090. This recent course featured extra live sessions from staff in Modern Languages, and achieved a high level of learner-engagement with course tasks and activities.
